16 Days of Action against Violence Against Women is a global campaign which runs from 25th Nov to 10th December. This year Engender are marking 16 Days with a joint event with the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF) and the Scottish Parliament Cross-PartyGroup on Men's Violence Against Women and Children. On December 1st at 5.30pm in the Scottish Parliament, the Cross- Party Group meeting will feature a talk from Cynthia Cockburn on Male Violence Against Women: Links betwen Peace and War. The Fawcett Society Equal Pay petition is now on their site - it calls on the govenment to implement the sections of the new Equality Act that were left out when the act became law in October. The section that relates to the gender pay gap was removed by the new government and is now being reviewed. Sign the petition here
As ever, good and bad news for low paid women in government announcements this week - more councils have been given the ability to settle historic equal pay claims (see here
) while Education Secretary Michael Gove has announced that the body that sets the pay for teaching assistants and dinner ladies is to be scrapped, which is likely to lead to pay in these jobs falling (see here)
Equal Pay - Where Next? - This is a new report from the EHRC (Equality and Human Rights Commission) which details the main discussions and recommendations from the Equal Pay – Where Next? conference held earlier this year to mark the 40th anniversary of the Equal Pay Act.
Women in the World - This UN report contains trends and statistics about women around the world.
A Gender Perspective on 21st Century Welfare Reform - This Oxfam paper provides a gender analysis of the potential impact of the governments welfare reform proposals.
9th November - Glasgow Feminist Network meeting, 6-7:30pm, in the Glasgow Women's Library (in the Mitchell Library) on 15 Berkeley Street.
11th November - The Women's Resource Centre for women in Science, Engineering and Technology are holding a free career development workshop for women in this field. See full details here
